When Apartheid fell in South Africa, my husband and I decided to up and leave England and emigrate to South Africa. As people of colour as well as professionals, we’d find ourselves constantly invited to dinner of white households and I remember telling a fellow guest about taking a walk from my house to the nearby shopping mall, and with each house, I passed, I’d be ‘met’ by large snarling, dribbling angry dogs (Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Doberman mainly) with just the gates protecting me. The guest (who was white) told me in a matter of fact way, that the dogs had been trained to smell black people — ‘whether they be men, women, children’.
